Dili calm after riot

Posted at 8:25pm on 1 May 2006

Heavily-armed convoys of police and soliders continue to patrol the East Timorese capital Dili to prevent a repeat of rioting that swept the city on Friday night.

While security appears to be holding in the city, most businesses remain closed. Hundreds of families are still sheltering in church properties in fear of further violence.

The Government has promised to act swiftly on the grievances of former soldiers whose protests triggered the mayhem of recent days. Foreign Minister Jose Ramos Horta said a special Commission will meet on Tuesday to begin mediating their complaints.

Meanwhile, the Australian Immigration minister Amanda Vanstone has warned there could be an influx of people trying to come to Australia after the violence.
